Itdrawsextensively on thephotographanddrawingarchives of David andJuneWinfield, held in theConway Library at theCourtauldInstitute of Art. TheWinfieldsrestoredthechurchfrom 1959-1963, in a projectmastermindedby David Talbot Rice. Here, TalbotRice’sphotographsfrom 1929, as well as those of otherearlyscholarswhovisited Trabzon, notablyGabriel Millet in 1893 andFyodorUspenskii in 1916-1917 arepresented. Thesescholarsrecordedthecity, itspalaces, churchesandmonasteries. Theyprovideglimpses of a lostempireand of thecity of Trebizondwhich has beentransformed in thedecades since theirvisits. Thisvolumealsoincludesthefirstpublishedtranslationinto English of thefourteenth-centurychronicle of Michael Panaretos.
