I graduated in Geography form Liverpool University in 1962. A Greek Government Scholarship in the following year facilitated research on settlement pattern development in the Mani region of the southern Peloponnisus. Appointment in the following years as Research Assistant in the Centre for Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies at Durham University took me to Turkey for the first time. There I studied land use change in the Aegean Region - a study never published. My time at Durham also allowed me to deepen my interest in the wider Middle East and led to career in which an historical perspective and an area studies approach iormed both my teaching and research. I think this orientation is apparent in the papers published here. Since they were produced in a academic career of over forty years, much of it spent in the Geography Department of the University of Southampton, they vary in quality. They are united, however, in their ffocus upon aspects of the geography of Turkey and the Ottoman Empire. I have grouped the papers and the headings of Modern Turkey, the Wider Ottoman Empire, Regions of the Empire and Travellers in the Empire.
