Dennis Waksul and coauthor Michele Waksul spent two years interviewing 71 people living in the Midwest to understand how and why people persist in believing in ghosts. They apply methods of sociology and ethnographic research to analyze peoples’ experiences of the paranormal and to categorize the beliefs and attitudes of people who have experienced ghosts. With the use of techniques of creative writing, along with b&w photos and quotes from interviews, real ethnographic field work is made accessible and engaging to students and general readers. The authors aim for academic methods and accuracy, but also reveal the emotions people experience and what ghostly experiences mean to individuals. An appendix gives info on study methods, data collection and analysis, and ethical considerations. In addition to students, the book’s readership includes ethnographers, sociologists, social psychologists, cultural anthropologists, and folklorists.
