The pictures by the American photographer Lynn Davis are reminiscent of sculptor's studies, as they deal with the body in a manner once described by Rudy Wurlitzer as pure celebration. Even where she focuses only upon a detail, the photograph is not the product of a fetishizing view but of her desire to place the part in relation to the whole. If it can be said that classical art strives to empower the body to withstand in space the terrifying emptiness and the destructive influence of time, the works of Lynn Davis can surely be placed within a classical tradition. The attitudes of Lynn Davis's models are abstract and grounded in a literary or anecdotal context. Her aim is to convey energy in its purest form. On the other hand, the body is never so abstract that beauty of line and form could entice us to neglect the concrete, physical erotic presence.
