Peter Kühnst was born in Heiligenstadt, East Germany, in 1946. A world-class gymnast, he moved to Cologne in 1974 following his release from confinement as a political prisoner in East Germany. He is now Professor of Sports Science at the University of Bochum in Germany, and the author of the critically acclaimed 'Sports: A Cultural History in the Mirror of Art'.
