During those years, the UN had a decisive influence on the history of the country and on the Arab-Israeli conflict. Bunche played an extremely significant role in this, as advisor to UNSCOP (the United Nations Special Committee on Palestine), which investigated the situation and in 1947 recommended the partition of Mandatory Palestine. Subsequently, he headed the secretariat of the UNPC (United Nations Palestine Commission , which was charged with implementing the partition plan, served as the senior aide to the UN mediator, Count Folke Bernadotte, and, after the latter’s assassination, himself became the head of the UN mediation effort.
