Goran Rosenberg is a well-known journalist in Sweden, and the child of Holocaust survivors. This is his acclaimed memoir addressing his father, who, like his mother, came to Sweden on the Red Cross buses after the war. Rosenberg chronicles small town Swedish life, sunny and progressive. But much as his parents tried to look forward, in the end the shadows of the past caught up with them. Rosenberg's father was initially denied Holocaust compensation by German doctors, after a psychologically gruelling examination, and fell into a deep depression. In this vivid and tragic book, Rosenberg shows that surviving the Holocaust is not just about being liberated from the camps. It's also about being able to live with the memories.
