Health social movements (HSMs) are very important components of our health care system, and a major force for change in our larger society. Yet scholars in the sociology of health and illness have not developed approaches to studying these movements that draw on social movements theory. Similarly, social movement theorists have not adapted their perspectives to explain the phenomenon of health social movements. This monograph brings together the study of health and illness and social movement theory in order to establish a basis for the study of health social movements. The contributions cover HSMs focused on diseases such Alzheimer's and breast cancer, but they also address issue-based HSMs such as the pro-choice movement, the movement for complementary and alternative medicine, and movements around stem cell research. Taken as a whole, the monograph illustrates the value of interdisciplinary approaches to studying HSMs.
