This book investigates the Turkish experiment in democracy that began with the formation of new political parties in 1945 and led to the peaceful abdication of power by the Republican People’s Party after the general election of 1950. One aim of the military intervention of March 1971 was to put an end to ideological challenge from the Left and to restore the old political consensus. Until October 1975, when the study ends, this aim had met with some success.
