Stories of Newark’s postwar decline abound, but Julia Rabig here illuminates the many imaginative projects mounted by Newark’s residents and suburban neighbors. Rabig shows how black nationalists built a dynamic political movement, as well as how white Catholic priests joined with black laywomen to pioneer methods of financing low-income housing. An unprecedented alliance of corporate leaders, civil rights activists, and union members provoked a showdown with white trade unions over the implementation of affirmative actionand began to realize integration in the construction trades. These individuals are all fixers”people who work with limited resources to pull together the threads of a patchwork welfare state. Rabig’s analysis of their victories and compromises enriches our understandings of social movement strategies, community development corporations, and the long black freedom movement.
