Along with the Messa da Requiem, this is our first reprint of a Works of Giuseppe Verdi volume in paperback study score format. New full-title and copyright pages. Otherwise, no new text for this volumes. Print from digital masters provided by Casa Ricordi. These include introductory text, facsimile halftones, and music. The full-text PDF has been posted to the Design drive. Between January and March 1853, Verdi’s Il trovatore and La traviata premiered in Rome and Venice, respectively. Rigoletto had premiered in March 1851, also in Venice. These three titles alone revolutionized Italian opera and would have been be enough to seal Verdi’s reputation as a composer. Of the three operas, Il trovatore enjoyed the most immediate and widespread success, with 229 stagings during the first three years of its existence. This popular success has continued to the present day. Based on El trovador by Garcia Gutierrez, a contemporary Spanish play first shown in Madrid in 1836, the libretto of Il trovatore is by Salvadore Cammarano, who also authored the libretti of Alzira and Luisa Miller, as well as Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor. Fast-paced and full of dramatic twists, the plot serves the music superbly and allows for unforgettable musical characterizations of people and places, including Azucena and the gypsies’ choir (“Stride la vampa”),
