More than 2,000 films have been made about journalism and journalists, including some of the greatest works in cinema history. From Citizen Kane to La Dolce Vita, from Capote to Good Night, and Good Luck, from Salvador to A Mighty Heart, journalism has fascinated and inspired writers, directors and actors. Brian McNair's new study of journalists in film asks what they tell us about changing public perceptions of journalism and its role in society. If journalism is one of the key cultural forms of our time, cinema is an arena where societal expectations and norms about journalism's role, and current public debates about its performance, are articulated.

This book will approach films about journalism as cinematic works of art in their own right, as well as documents of journalism's evolving public role. In a series of lively chapters, films such as Shattered Glass, The Sweet Smell of Success, and Ace in the Hole are employed as the basis for consideration of key issues in the ongoing public debate around journalism - the impact of commercialisation on news values; the power of the columnist; the implications of new digital technologies for established news media; the role of the journalist in a post-9/11 world.
