“What does it mean to see the American landscape in a secular way?” asks Nicolas Howe at the outset of his erudite, ambitious, and wide-ranging assessment of the interplay among landscape theory, religious history, and American law. Answering this question, Howe says, requires us to look hard at secularism, not just as an abstract political ideology or cultural outlook, but as a way of imagining and making places. Howe’s breathtaking fusion of geography, legal scholarship, and religion centers around legal conflicts over the concept of “sacred space”—a concept shaped not merely by the law but by culture and the parameters of public expression of religion. Seemingly routine questions about how to look at a sunrise or a plateau, or how to assess the physical and spiritual aspects of a mountain, lead to complex arguments over the nature of subjective experience and its implications for action or expression in the material world.
