The death of Alessandro Manzoni, the author of “The betrothed,” however, prompted Verdi to write this Mass for full orchestra, chorus, and four solo voices. It was first performed in the church of St. Mark in Milan a year after Manzoni’s death, on 22 May 1874, with Verdi at the podium. This is a work of great spiritual beauty and power by “a very doubtful believer,” as Verdi’s wife, Giuseppina Strepponi, dubbed him. Its success with audiences and the press was immediate and early in the twentieth century Bernard Shaw predicted that none of Verdi’s operas would prove as enduring as the Requiem. To this day, the work is widely and often performed and continues to move audiences worldwide.
