The Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts is the first Turkish museum to cover Turkish and Islamic works of art as a group, as well as being the last museum to be opened under the Ottoman Empire.

In the year 1914, the soup kitchen building (imâret) of the Süleymaniye Mosque complex—one of the most important of the structures designed by the architect Sinan (1490–1588)—was opened to the public under the name “Museum of Islamic Charitable Foundations” (Evkâf-ı İslâmiyye Müzesi). This museum was established largely due to the fact that works located in charitable foundation (vakıf) buildings such as mosques, Sufi lodges, and tombs were being stolen; as a result, the Ottoman grand vizier Hüseyin Hilmi Pasha addressed a number of documents to customs houses, requesting customs officials to be on the lookout for stolen items being smuggled into Europe so as to be housed in museums there.
