This study for scholars and advanced students in literature explores the work of two American writers, David Foster Wallace and Dave Eggers, and their efforts at writing nonfiction, memoir, autobiography, and autocriticism that is sincere rather than ironic. Postirony (or post-irony) is defined here as post-postmodernism, or writing beyond postmodernism’s irony. The book examines the post-ironic movement in contemporary US literature, focusing on nonfiction texts, and the effects these texts have on audiences. In addition to Wallace and Eggers, the book looks at the writing of other writers, including Jonathan Lethem, Nick Flynn, Richard Rorty, Linda Hutcheon, Jedediah Purdy, and Alex Shakar.
