This book is a summary of my unconventional and innovative economic analyses suggested by the Turkish experience, which has been published in my several books and articles over 50 years. My first unconventional essays were published some 50 years ago. However, they were just the beginning. I have developed them slowly and I have added to the adjective (unconventional) another of it, i. e., innovative..

In this book the slow development of my ideas are summarized, sometime by repeating the original ones and sometime a developed version of them.

I believe that even if a proportion of my ideas are right, a good proportion of introductory and intermediate books on economics should be rewritten..

This book is written in order to underline 3 important defficiencies in teaching economics.

1 - There are some inadequate or insufficient theoretical explanations of various economic issues in introductory and intermediate textbooks used to teach contemporary economics.

Apart from an introduction to the principles of economics,
introductory and intermediate texts should include operational
explanations in order to understand the problems encountered in practice
and they should offer solutions to them. Yet, this is not the case.
When the explanations and solutions suggested in these books
are tested in practical cases, it is observed that this sometimes is not in
the right direction. The Turkish experience is the case in point; this is
 shown in this book.
At the beginning of each chapter a short summary of what is written in introductory texts on topics dealt with in this book are very shortly summarized in order to be a reference for critical comments 1 have made. As will be explained in this book, after the reference for issues dealt with in this book, all unconventional comments based on the experience of the Turkish economy are expounded. I firstly describe the Turkish observation and then I present comments for what is written on the theory and also I present my comments on comments patterned after what was in the literature about the Turkish economy.

As the title of this book suggests, this is written for filling the gaps and for the correction of inadequate analyses in traditional introductory and intermediate textbooks widely used to teach economics.

My career extending back several years (71 years) in learning and teaching economics has given me an impression that there are important gaps which should be immediately filled and the inadequate analyses of several problems should be corrected and replaced by better ones. The basis of this impression is related to my observations when I tried to see the problems encountered by the Turkish economy. The suggestions made for solving these problems in line with the writings in these books were not helpful. What was worse they would lead the researchers to false conclusions.

This process goes to back to the early 60's. As a result, I tried to seek new solutions which would require new theories and unknown analyses. Manv of my theories and analyses were closely related to the well known ones but I had to develop and improve them. 1 learned the basics by reading hundreds of introductory and intermediate books. Although I read a few advanced books, I could not follow the path opened by them. The advanced ones and those in which complicated mathematics were used were beyond my reach. However, I was quite sure that important theories, analyses and theorems in more accessible form would be included in introductory and intermediate books. In fact, the advanced hooks included what was on the frontier and they had to be brought to more practical forms in future.

Ever since the 70's I have been writing dozen of books to correct what was inadequate, and replace them with more appropriate ones.

I must stress at the beginning that the present book is biassed in the sense that the space devoted to the theory of economic growth was much more than that in which other topics are dealt with. The reason for this is that my more important innovative ideas are related to this topic.

The development of my ideas firstly putforward in 1978 is summarized in this book. At the beginning, the main focus was the relative prices of agricultural and nonagri cultural sectors; yet, I ended up with relative prices of labor and nonlabor intensive goods, and by this procedure I tried to bring together macro and micro dimensions: a procedure which is one of the main characteristics of where contemporary economics reached.

In addition to the topic in the center, i.e., the reformulation of the theory of growth, I also present my innovative and challenging ideas on almost even' issue dealt with in economic analyses, and I validate them by the Turkish experience which suggested them.

Although theory was in the center, the application of the theoretical analysis to the Turkish economy might give a misconception that this is a book on this economy. As underlined above, this is not the case. In fact, I have written several books on the Turkish economy, e.g., A SURVEY OF THE TURKISH ECONOMIC HISTORY AND ITS CHANGING STRUCTURE, 1925-2004 (Istanbul 2005), in which the recent history of this economy, its structure and problems are examined in detail. In fact, in the present book there is not a systematic account of events which occurred there, and also a description of its structure. In this book the Turkish economy is only the background. As mentioned before, events in this economy have suggested the analyses in all my work. I felt that I should give some information about what occurred in this economy when I tried to comment about contemporary literature and discussions on these issues.. Otherwise, the information about the Turkish economy is very limited.
