In its scope and inclusivity, David Coward's volume is more than a history of the literature of France from its origins to the present day, though it is that too. It is a book that registers the impact of postmodern thought upon our understanding of what we mean by "literature" and what historically has been meant by the term. It aims to allow us to see the diverse wealth of French literature: whether colonial or postcolonial, or francophone writing (from Belgium to Canada, from Quebec to the Caribbean, from Mauritius to Madagascar, from Alegeria, Morocco and Tunisia to the Sub-Sahara). It is set in the widest possible cultural context. It takes us beyond literature into the world of the best-seller and, beyond words, to the graphic fiction of the cinema. In the course of this account the author maps the rise of the intellectual, from the time of Dreyfus to Benda, from the Existentialists to the Post-Structuralists and beyond and in so doing charts a progression from literary doctrine to critical theory.
